Grand Prize Winner!

2010 Oneswan Productions Writing Competition

Irene Zimmerman

"Song of Seasons"

Irene Zimmerman

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

$300 Cash Prize

Irene Zimmerman, a Catholic Franciscan sister from Milwaukee, began her professional career as a high school teacher of English and French. Later, she served on the clerical staff of several institutions founded by her congregation. These included an all-girls school in Germany and Alverno College, a women’s college in Milwaukee.

Zimmerman draws poetic inspiration from family, nature, personal life experiences, and Scripture. She has authored four books of poetry, the most recent one being Incarnation: New and Selected Poems for Spiritual Reflection (Cowley Publications, 2004). In addition, more than 150 of her poems, stories, and essays have appeared in periodicals and anthologies. Several of her poems have won top awards from the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets and the Catholic Press Association.

In her statement of artistic purpose, Sister Irene writes: “I write poetry as an act of worship of God the Creator, and as a way of generating life in myself and others. Writing a poem helps me to realize and appreciate, in a very limited but real way, how God our Creator loves, enjoys, and yearns over each individual creature, most especially human creatures.”

First Place Winner

Angela Ortiz-Webb

Crowley, Texas

$100

"Solibye"

Angela Ortiz-Webb was born in Houston, Texas thirty-three years ago. She was raised in Englewood, Ohio but came back to Texas when she was fifteen years-old and has never left. Angela has three incredible children, two boys and one beautiful little girl. She is married to a "wonderfully patient husband of eleven years and we have been together for thirteen years." She describes herself as a simple person who loves the small things in life and aspire for the big, yet important things. She professes to have little formal education, "certainly not for this arena," but loves to write. Angela says she express herself best through writing. She has been writing for about eighteen years now, drawing inspiration from many different things. However, personal trials seems to bring out her best work. Angela says, "Recently I’ve been writing music. So far that’s been very rewarding, and I look forward to seeing how much better I can become."  Mrs. Webb says her greatest accomplishments in her life call her Mom and Beautiful!

Second Place Winner

Karen R. Springer

Williamstown, New Jersey

$75

"Nature's Child"

Dr. Karen R. Springer has been writing poetry since the age of ten. She has three, as to date, unpublished anthologies: 101 Speakings of the Giddy Gypsy, High Noon and My Pistol's Smoking, and Getting There. Much of her energy for the past forty years has been devoted to her career as an administrator in several southern New Jersey school districts where she served as superintendent and principal. She has several degrees, including Bachelors of Arts and Master of Arts in Teaching in Music, as well as a Master of Arts and Doctor of Education in Public School Administration.

After her formal “retirement” from public education, Dr. Springer served as a senior director in higher education, after-school/summer administrator in an urban school setting, as well as headmistress of a private school. She is currently an education consultant. She lives happily with her husband of 39 years. They both enjoy their rustic summer home in the woods at the Jersey shore. She also loves going to the opera as well as singing it.

Karen best summarizes herself in the opening quatrain of her poem, “The Good Ol' Girl”:

I'm just a simple good ol' girl

who drinks her coffee black

Sips scotch as strong as iodine

and drives a Cadillac.
